My friend used a "bankruptcy advocate" to help her file for bankruptcy. What is it and do I need one?

I've been trying to pay off my debts for a long time and don't seem to be getting anywhere. How do you know when/if you should file for bankruptcy? Do you have to be unemployed?

Can I go bankrupt without meeting a Trustee? I live in a remote location.

The recent amendments to the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act now change the length of time a person is required to stay in Bankruptcy.
