Newfoundland and Labrador consumer insolvencies jump 22 per cent in the second quarter, the highest increase in the country

Underscoring financial vulnerabilities in Newfoundland and Labrador when it comes to consumer debt, the latest official figures from the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy (OSB) continue to reinforce the mounting strain on many households in the province. The number of Newfoundland and Labrador residents who filed for insolvency in the second quarter of 2019 was up 22.4 per cent compared to the same quarter of last year, the greatest increase compared to the rest of the country. Consumer insolvencies in Newfoundland and Labrador were up 19.2 per cent compared to the first quarter of this year.
