Almost sixty per cent of Ontarians now say they are $200 or less per month away from not being able to meet all of their bills or debt obligations each month, an increase of 10 points since February 2016. Thirty-five per cent of this group say they already don’t make enough money to cover their bills and debt payments, technically making them financially insolvent.

In early 2015 the Ontario Government announced dramatic changes to the law in Ontario regulating the debt settlement industry, effective July 1, 2015. Traditionally, debt settlement firms have negotiated settlements with creditors on behalf of consumers where the consumer makes a one-time payment for less than one hundred percent of the current outstanding balance as settlement in full of an outstanding account.
