According to a recent Ipsos poll conducted by MNP LTD., Albertans' pocketbooks are continuing to get lighter as a result of recent interest rate increases. The latest results from the quarterly survey indicate a worsening situation and foreshadows more trouble ahead. Up 17 percent over the last quarter, more than half of Albertans (55%) say they've felt the pinch of higher interest payments – higher than anywhere else across the country and the largest increase overall. This sees nearly six in ten (59%) concerned about how past and future hikes could impact their ability to repay their debts – a nine percent increase. Moreover, rising 11 percent in the past three months, more than two in five (43%) now believe this trend could push them towards bankruptcy.
Collectively, this indicates even more Albertans are struggling to make ends meet. While those who are $200 or less from making ends meet has decreased slightly over the last three months, it still hovers above two in five (41%). At the same time, three in 10 (30%) admit their budget is already maxed out at the end of the month, while more than half (53%) of households expect to take on more debt over the next year just to cover basic living expenses – a 5 percent increase over the last quarter.
A lack of emergency savings also continues to be a pressing concern. Across the board, confidence in Albertans' ability to handle an unexpected expense looks bleak. In the event of an unexpected auto repair or purchase, only 19 percent believe they could do so without requiring debt – down 15 percent. The trend is similar for taking three months off work due to illness (22%) – down 14 percent, job loss (17%) – down 18 percent or paying for their own or someone else's education (19%) – down six percent.
Albertans are in an extremely vulnerable position right now. Compared to all provinces, they are more likely to rate their debt situation as worse than one or five years ago. Yet a surprising number expect their financial situation to improve in both the near and long term, with 29 percent predicting it will be better within the year and 48 percent within five years. However, the steep decline in debt confidence over the past quarter does not echo their optimism. Creating those improvements will require immediate and significant changes.
Anyone who is only making the minimum payments, relying on credit to cover basic expenses or is struggling to make ends meet would likely benefit from the help of an accredited professional. The sooner the reach out, the more options they will likely have to improve their situation and prevent it from deteriorating any further.

The latest Index data was compiled by Ipsos on behalf of MNP LTD between March 12 and March 16, 2018. For this survey, a sample of 2,001 Canadians from the Ipsos I-Say panel was interviewed online. The precision of online polls is measured using a credibility interval.
