"My name is Steve. First and foremost... I am not being paid to write a few good paragraphs to make MNP Debt in Red Deer look good. Haha. What you are about to read is a genuine and true statement about my experience with MNP Debt.
I signed up for my second bankruptcy in October of 2010. Yes, I have been bad and should have learned from the first bankruptcy not to do it again. Nonetheless, the thought of bankruptcy again was overwhelming. But hey, we are all human, period. Upon entering the MNP building, my first impression was warm and inviting. Reception staff were a delight to chat with. I then met with Jillian. She explained all of my options and we both agreed bankruptcy was best for me. She was very kind and showed empathy.
My 2nd bankruptcy has begun. During the next 2 months, personal situations arose and I fell into a depression. I had given up on everything. This included fulfilling my obligations and responsibilities as a bankrupt. My file remained idle for many month and years. I also made no contact with staff. In August 2013, I came to the realization that I needed to pull myself out from under the rock that I was hiding under and complete my bankruptcy.
I called my MNP office and spoke to Cheryl. Again, she was also kind and receptive to what I had to say. We both agreed on an action plan to get back on track with my obligations. This included modifications to my obligations as somewhere time-sensitive. My file was ready to be closed months prior to my reconnection with the office staff. I am very fortunate and grateful to the MNP staff for all patience and understanding. My bankruptcy will be completed in summer 2015.

"I was no different than anyone who has had to face the realization that help was needed in an increasingly unbearable financial situation that was affecting one's whole life. Taking the first step to make the call to discuss my situation with a professional and then taking the next dramatic step to declare personal bankruptcy brought on all kinds of negative thoughts and feelings. No matter that I might have been very successful in my work and other things, the unending cycle of debts meant failure - or a feeling that life had made me a victim.
But from the first call I made to MNP on the suggestion of a friend who had gone through bankruptcy, I began to feel that I was no longer alone with my financial struggle. After listening to Sara on the phone, I was encouraged to meet with her. Not long afterwards, I decided to take the huge step and declare bankruptcy, fully confident in this trustee who carefully detailed what I would next face.
Not to say, it was all easy and that I became free of stress. For someone without an accountant while self-employed in the arts and media with income and expenses in constantly changing work situations, it meant hard concentrated work to provide the documents in the process. Sara was the perfect advisor, very intelligent in her role to look not just after me, but all my creditors with total impartiality and fair judgment. But beyond this, was her human warmth and understanding: utterly professional, she was not there to judge, but respect me - my predicament, anxieties and my professional accomplishments. I know trustees face every kind of response - sadness, depression, resignation and anger - from those of us facing bankruptcy. But there's no doubt each of her clients would experience what I did.
To go down the road of a bankruptcy declaration kept me anxious to the very end. But after each meeting with Sara, I left smiling, feeling good about myself and future in spite of the connotations that this event bears.
Now, I feel relieved, happy and optimistic. But also I must admit sad - knowing I will no longer be meeting with Sara. So, in the end, a further meeting upon my request was essential: to thank her in a final farewell.

"I found myself increasingly challenged to make my debt payments as a result of divorce, family illness, personal illness, unemployment and eventual retirement and, although I hated to admit it, financial mismanagement. I was increasing stressed trying to find ways of continuing to meet my financial obligations. I think the final blow was when I opened a credit card statement to be informed that if I continued to make the minimum payment due my balance would be paid in full in 196 years.
An accountant acquaintance who had some familiarity with my situation suggested that I talk with MNP about declaring bankruptcy. After much dithering while I searched for other ways of continuing to meet my financial obligations I finally called MNP and arranged an appointment. I met with one of their Trustees and one of their Estate Managers. They quietly, professionally and with great empathy encouraged me to share my story, my circumstances with them. They asked a number of clarifying questions but at no time did I feel that they were sitting in judgment of me and my situation. They then clearly described the options available to me, gave me ample time to ask questions which they patiently responded to and encouraged me to return home and reflect on everything we had discussed during our meeting. After about a week of reviewing the material they had left with me, as well as my notes from our meeting, and after much condemnation of myself for allowing myself to get into this position, I made a second appointment and started the process of going bankrupt.
Both the Trustee and the Estate Manager worked closely with me to prepare all of the necessary documentation. They made what was a very difficult decision for me as positive as possible and I began the slow journey to finally realizing that this was the only viable option, that bankruptcy legislation was there for a reason ... to help people build a new financial reality with the requisite skills to more effectively manage their finances. The Estate Manager work closely with me throughout the entire process, patiently and with clarity answering all of my myriad questions. When the final day came and I was formally discharged from the bankruptcy program I almost hated to say goodbye to the individuals that I had dealt with at MNP. I felt I had made friends who had guided me though a very difficult period in my life and I didn't want to let them go!
I don't think I could have done all of this if it hadn't been for the people at MNP. They helped me to get a new start on life!!"

We are very fortunate for the decision we made, very thankful to our Trustee we work with, for giving us hope, helping us cleaning our mess and a better life. I said new life, right, because it is new, now we understand the bankruptcy purpose and acknowledge the great work that our Trustee does, we learned it and experienced it first hand, and all I can say is, this is not it, but it is much more.
The bankruptcy took the heavy load off of our twisted backs and gave us the freedom to move, see and think clearly, we managed to review what went wrong, and also look forward not only to not repeat the same mistakes, but also to improve our decision-making and revive our hope.
I could go on and on with the positive outcome that happened to us, though no words would be enough to reflect our wonderful feelings, our Trustee and appreciation for all that our Trustee accomplished for us. I believe that the greatest gift in life is to be able to make other people happy and help them transform their life so they could fully enjoy and appreciate the value of life, family and friends.
